Education is a vital tool for empowerment that allows meaningful
contributions to society. According to UNICEF, girls' education does not
only bring the immediate benefit of empowering girls, but is seen as
the best investment in a country's development.
Education helps girls to develop essential life skills including self
confidence, the ability to participate effectively in society and
protect themselves from HIV/ AIDS and other sexual exploitations. UNICEF
further asserts that girls' education
also helps in cutting children and maternal mortality rates,
contributing to national wealth and controlling disease and health
status.
Children of educated women are likely to go to
school. Consequently, this has exponential positive effects on education
and poverty education for generations to come. One very important aim
of every family is to raise healthy and productive individuals who will
contribute meaningfully to society.
This can be achieved through the education of the girl-child who is the mother of tomorrow

A woman is considered as a man's property or pleasure object. She is
also considered as a 'machine' meant for producing children. This
situation has resulted in unfair treatment of women especially with
regards to education.
The average rural Nigerian parent would rather invest in the education of the son rather than the daughter further proves that gender inequality in Nigeria is promoted by religious and communal customs. Young girls particularly in Northern Nigeria are denied the benefit of education. This has grave consequences for both the individual and the society at large.

Today’s girls are tomorrow’s women; the differential treatment of girls
and boys can hardly be separated from the preferential treatment of men
to women in our society.
Being born and growing up as a girl in a developing society like Nigeria is almost like a curse due to ignominy treatment received from the family, the school and the society at large. The cumulative effects of these discriminatory, exploitative and unjust treatments have had profound negative.

A girl child must be valued
Girls need a safe and supportive environment, free from abuse, with
separate and healthy toilet facilities, safe drinking water, equal
attention with boys and a gender sensitive curriculum.
The unique and far-reaching benefits of educating the girl-child include the proven fact that educating her is the best investment for societal development. The short and long term benefits to girls are based on the evidence that educated girls develop essential life skills, including self confidence, the ability to participate effectively in society and protect themselves from HIV/AIDS infection, sexual exploitation and pressures for early marriage and childbirth.

EDUCAET A GIRL CHILD TODAY
In the past, education has not necessarily been a priority for the girl-child because of cultural beliefs, poverty and so on. It is believed that the place of the girl-child is in her husband’s house. The male child was considered to be superior to the gild-child in many aspects especially education and that is why in most cases; only the male child had access to education. Unfortunately, many people still hold unto this disparity between the female and the male gender.
Other causes for the negligence of the girl-child education could be attributed to parent’s unwillingness to send the girl-child to school. Some parents feel it is a waste to educate the girl-child because she would one day be married to someone else. Even when they have the means to educate her, they would always refrain from doing so.
Ignorance and illiteracy of the parents also account greatly for the negligence of the girl-child education. When the parents are illiterate and ignorant of the western education, they would find no reason why the girl-child should be given equal right with the boy-child. This is because their mentality and attitude is been influenced by what they see around them and the ancient beliefs.
In a situation where the parents are poor, they would always choose to use the little resources to take the boy-child to school and allow the girl-child to either hawk or engage in other activities. The question is,
why this disparity between the boy-child and the girl-child?
The girl-child also needs to be educated to acquire knowledge and skills needed to advance her status – knowledge for social interaction, self improvement and status advancement. The girl-child education also prepares her to face the reality in the society and teaches her to be a good wife and mother.
Education would also help the girl-child to develop civic sense and learn to respect, love her fellow human beings and to be a good and patriotic citizen. It will also make her to think, question and judge independently.

because the girls aren't back. So I think that we get mixed

'August: Osage County' actress Misty Upham dead at 32

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the body was found by Upham’s family and friends during a search of the area. Local filmmaker Tracy Rector, a friend of Upham’s, said that the Auburn Police Department was less than helpful in the search process: “The family wants everyone to know that the Auburn police did not help with this situation at all,” she told THR. “They refused to help. When she disappeared on Oct. 5, the family knew something was seriously wrong—it was out of character for her to be gone so long without being in touch—and they repeatedly went to the police, who insisted there was no cause for concern.” According to Rector, Upham’s uncle led the search party.
As of now, Upham’s cause of death is unknown; there’s reportedly no indication of foul play. Despite reports that the actress suffered from bipolar disorder, her family no longer suspects that this was a suicide.
Born in Montana on Feb. 8, 1982, Misty Upham made her first onscreen appearance in 2002 with Chris Eyre’s Skins, quickly followed by another Eyre project, Skinwalkers. It wasn’t until 2008 that Upham took on a major leading role in Frozen River, in which she played a Mohawk Indian who smuggled illegal immigrants over the border. That role landed her an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

Strength of a WOMAN
i
actually got this online,,,while doing my normal day to day research
about women/girls,,,,so i decided to share,,relax and read it,,and then
thank me later
By the time the Lord made woman,
He was into his Sixth day of working overtime.
An Angel appeared and said, "Why are you spending so much time on this one?"
And the Lord answered and said, "Have you seen the spec sheet on her? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have 200 movable
parts, all replaceable, run on black coffee and leftovers, have a lap that can hold two children at one time and that disappears when she stands up,
have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart, and have six pairs of hands."
The Angel was astounded at the requirements for this one.
"Six pairs of hands!
No Way!" said the Angel.
The Lord replied, "Oh, it's not the hands that are the problem.
It's the three pairs of eyes that mothers must have!
And that's just on the standard model?"
The Angel asked about the three pairs of eyes.
The Lord nodded. "Yep, one pair of eyes are to see through the closed door as she asks her children what they are doing even though she already
knows. Another pair in the back of her head are to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks she can. And the third pair are here in the front of her head. They are for looking at an errant child and saying that she understands and loves him or her without even saying a single word."
The Angel tried to stop the Lord. "This is too much work for one day, wait until tomorrow to finish."
"But I can't!" The Lord protested, "I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is
sick AND can feed a family on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine year old tostand in the shower."
The Angel moved closer and touched the woman, "But you have made her so soft, Lord." "She is soft," The Lord agreed, "but I have also made her
tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."
"Will she be able to think?" asked the Angel.
The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate."
The Angel then noticed something and reached out and touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak with this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one."
"That's not a leak," The Lord objected, "That's a tear!"
"What's the tear for?" the Angel asked.
The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her loneliness, her grief, and her pride."
The Angel was impressed. "You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything, for women are truly amazing."
Women have strengths that amaze men.
They carry children, they carry hardships, they carry burdens but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up for injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without new shoes so their children can have them.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They have sorrow at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all sizes, in all colors and shapes.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you. The heart of a woman is what makes the world spin!
Women do more than give birth.
They bring joy and hope.
They give compassion and ideals.
Women have a lot to say and a lot to give.

IMPORTANCE OF GIRLS EDUCATION
Girls education
Offering girls basic education is one sure way of giving them much greater power of enabling them to make genuine choices over the kinds of lives they wish to lead. This is not a luxury. The Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women establish it as a basic human right.
That women might have the chance of a healthier and happier life should be reason enough for promoting girls' education. However, there are also important benefits for society as a whole. An educated woman has the skills, information an

Importance of girls education
Girls’ education is one of the most effective ways for ending poverty
in developing nations. The benefits of their education are seen by
individuals, their families, and throughout society. These benefits
include:
Women who attended school often have healthier families. These women are more likely to seek medical help from clinics or doctors. Because they can read, literate women can understand a doctor’s detailed instructions and follow up for help if needed. These women also can read nutritional labels and provide their family healthy meals that promote growth and lower cholesterol. Education also teaches young ones the importance of keeping herself and her house clean and safe.
As their families are healthier, so is the mother. She is less likely to be a young mother since she stayed in school and will have better-spaced pregnancies that are healthy for her body. Education is amazing: the World Bank determined that each year of school prevents 2 maternal deaths out of 1000 women each year!
Sending your daughters to school can be challenging to your pocket book and her safety. You can protect them with your support and involvement in their education. This will curb most teacher or student harassment that they would feel uncomfortable with. Continue reading the links to see how the price to your wallet will be worth it now and in the long-run.

Relatives torture two children over alleged witchcraft in Akwa Ibom

Two children ─ Mary Odiong and Master
Ekong Asua ─ both eight years, from the Okobo Local Government Area of
Akwa Ibom State, have been tortured and sent out of their homes on the
allegation of witchcraft.
Odiong, who spoke with our correspondent
on Thursday, said a few weeks after her uncle died in Okopedi village
of an ailment suspected to be Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, some
relatives of hers said she was responsible for the AIDS and the
subsequent death of the uncle.
She said, “The people in my family
called me and started asking me questions whether I was a witch and why I
killed my uncle. I told them that I did not know anything about what
they were talking about.
“They started beating me. They hit me with cutlasses. They cut my buttocks with knives.
“After the beating became too much, I
lost consciousness. Later, I woke up to find myself in a bush. I have
been living on the streets since last month without food and shelter.”
The second victim, Asua, from Oti Oro
village, told our correspondent that his parents died a few weeks ago
from strange ailments.
He said after the death of his parents, his uncles began to accuse him of killing them through wizardry.
He said, “My uncles told me that they
went somewhere to find out why my parents died. They said they were told
that I killed both of them through witchcraft. They tied my hands and
started beating me up with native sugarcane and asked me to confess.
“When I insisted that I knew nothing
about the death of my parents, they took me to a bush, where I met
Odiong. Both of us have been living on the streets since then,” he said.
The Project Director, African Children
Aid, Education and Development Foundation, Mr. Nsidibe Orok, said it was
unfortunate that children were still branded as witches and wizards in a
state that had put in place laws prohibiting the abuse of children.
He commended the state police command for responding to the plights of the hapless children.
He urged the police to investigate the matter with a view to bringing the culprits to book as a deterrent to others.
He, however, attributed the incident to
ignorance and poverty. He advised religious organisations to educate the
people more on the need to care and love little children.
The state Police Public Relations
Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, said he had yet to be briefed. He promised to
get back to our correspondent once he had information about the
children.
But a police extract from the Okobo
Police Division, signed by CSP Abdulkhadir Eljamal, and seen by our
correspondent revealed that the children were picked up and brought to
the station by volunteers of African Children Aid, Education and
Development Foundation.
The children are currently receiving treatment at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

Okonjo-Iweala, while thanking the African Investor Magazine for the honour, called on investors in the continent to join the fight against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) that has brought economies in some West African countries to their feet.
“What is happening in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra-Leone and the success we had in Nigeria and Senegal in containing this virus should not be allowed to set Africa back.
“You as private sector and friends of Africa need to send the message that we should not be so afraid of Ebola that we stigmatise the whole continent.
Okonjo-Iweala also said that in spite of the challenges faced by Africa, including infrastructure, poor education system, governance, corruption, employment, among others, its leaders should sustain the successes recorded in the past.
“We are not shying away from these challenges but the turning point now is that we are in the continent where we have the political will and confidence to tackle these challenges.
“I think that we as Africans must always take the lead because if we don’t solve our problems, nobody can do it for us,” she said.

ROBBERS ATTACKED A MAN'S CAR,THREW AWAY BABY AND RAPED WIFE TILL HALF DEAD

Tears flowed freely as people beheld the pathetic sight of a middle-aged nursing mother whose three-month old baby was thrown into the bush while an eight-man gang of devilish souls raped her to a point of unconsciousness right in the presence of her husband.
The woman (names with held) who had bruises all over her body especially in the waist region could barely stand unaided when she was sighted at the headquarters of the Kogi State Police Command. Continue..
Sunnews gathered that the suspects waylaid the couple on their way to the village, and dispossessed the husband and wife of their cash and valuables at gunpoint. Then they took them in the family car to a nearby bush where they tied the husband and raped the wife who was at that time breast feeding her three-month-old baby.
It was learnt that one of the armed robbers on getting to the bush slapped the wife and forcibly took the baby away from her hands and threw the baby aside. He pointed a gun to her head and ordered her to undress.
For more than two hours, the eight robbers, one after the other, thereafter engaged the poor woman in a marathon sex while the husband watched helplessly and the hapless innocent baby cried profusely.
Parading the suspects before newsmen, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Odude said the family was travelling from Ogugu in Olamaboro Local Government Area, Kogi State to Iga-Ikeje when the robbers accosted them.
Odude said the victim (names withheld) a native of Ogugu reported at the Olamaboro Police Division and stated that he was travelling in his Toyota Corolla car with his wife and baby when suddenly some eight armed robbers accosted them, dispossessing them of their car, N6600 cash and mobile phone sets.
The alleged robbers then bundled them into the vehicle and drove them inside the bush about two kilometres from the road, where the man was tied to a tree prior to raping the wife. Giving further explanation of what transpired, he said the wife who was oblivious of their plan as she was crying and begging them not to kill her husband. This prompted one of the robbers to give her a vicious slap, took the baby away and ordered her to undress, while pointing a gun to her head.
He said the woman fainted after the ordeal.
Done with their evil business, they sons-of-the devil tied up the woman’s legs and drove away in the car.
After about 40 minutes, the woman regained consciousness, struggled to free herself and walked to a nearby village, where she informed a group of vigilantes, who later rescued the husband.
On receiving the report, a police patrol team led by Mr. Mbang Eteng, an Assistant Superintendent of Police tracked down and arrested two of the robbers, whose names were given as Vincent Oguche from an uncompleted building, and Femi Simon, who attempted to run away, but was overpowered by policemen and both of them taken into custody.
The police said the two suspects in the course of interrogation confessed to the crime and thereafter led the detectives to their hideout, where the stolen car, assorted guns and handsets were recovered. The names of two other members of the gang were given as Friday Oguche and Joe Agbo. The police are still on the trail of the remaining four members who are still at large.
Vincent Oguche while acknowledging that he and the others actually committed the heinous crime, explained why they raped the woman despite that she was nursing a baby, saying: “We were not in our right sense because we were very high on drugs.”
Femi Simon who claimed to be a native of Iyah Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of the state said he was an unemployed driver who was conscripted into the deal. He said he could not control his libido when he saw his comrades-in-crime ‘enjoying themselves’ so he had to join them to have a taste of the woman.
The police rebuffed the request to speak with the woman, firmly saying she should be left alone on account of the horrendous ordeal she experienced.

Pakistanis are rallying online in anger following the death on Friday of Amina Bibi, a teenage gang rape victim who set herself on fire to protest the release of a main suspect.
Bibi was attacked and gang raped on her way back from college in January, in Punjab province's Muzaffargarh. Her brother reportedly said the trauma of sexual assault and a police decision to release the main suspect in the attack pushed her to self-immolate.

terrible and wicked!! Girl 'raped by 38 men' in Malaysia

At least 13 people detained after allegation that a 15-year-old girl was gang-raped in the northern state of Kelantan.

Almost 3,000 rapes were reported to the police in Malaysia in 2012, of which 52 percent involved girls below 16.

Malaysian police have detained 13 men and are looking
for other suspects following allegations that a 15-year-old girl was
raped by 38 men in the country's northern region. Astro Awani television and The Star newspaper reported that the assault took place in the northern state of Kelantan on May 20, when the girl was lured to an empty hut reported to be a local drug haunt. The men took turns to rape her for hours. Police are also investigating whether her 17-year-old friend was also raped. Media accounts, quoting information from district police chief Azham Otham, said 38 men were involved. Several of those detained had tested positive for amphetamine, the reports said. The New Straits Times said a man and his two teenage sons were among those detained. Police said action could have been taken had villagers reported the addicts' presence, Reuters news agency said. "It is very disturbing to me that no one in the village was even suspicious when the closest neighbour was a mere 20 metres away," Otham told The Star newspaper. 'Extremely worrying' The alleged attack, one of several brutal cases this week underscoring the violence to which women are being subjected across Asia, sparked outrage among women's groups. Politicians from a Muslim party running the region said their proposal to introduce Islamic hudud law, with harsh penalties, would deter offenders. Suri Kempe, an official with women's rights group Sisters in Islam, told Reuters that the frequent number of rape cases being reported was "extremely worrying". "Boys are being raised in a culture where being masculine means being aggressive, and that it's perfectly acceptable to use violence to get what you want," she said in a statement. Almost 3,000 rapes were reported to the police in Malaysia in 2012, of which 52 percent involved girls aged 16 and below, according to police statistics. Convicted rapists face up to 30 years in prison and whipping, but many have called for stricter punishment. culled from Aljazeera |
